Tent City Collective, a group of UW students, alumni, community members, and people experiencing homelessness, are working with UW faculty and staff to bring Tent City 3 to the university for the second time since 2017. Tent City 3 is a self-governing community designed to shelter and aid people without homes around Seattle. Their mission is to activate, educate, and unite students and people experiencing homelessness in order to end the many inequalities that perpetuate it.
Homelessness is a recognized crisis in Seattle and Washington State. Hosting an organized tent city community provides an opportunity to change the discourse on homelessness in the minds of Washington’s next generation of leaders and plant the seeds of social change. Together, the UW and TC3 aims to foster an environment where sustainable and creative solutions can form.
This Winter Quarter 2021, UW will be welcoming TC3 to stay on their Seattle campus for the second time since the 2017-2018 school year. The Community Engagement and Leadership Education (CELE) Center, in partnership with the School of Nursing, School of Medicine, and Tent City Collective, will provide administrative and tactical support for the Winter 2021 residency of Tent City 3. All funds raised will directly support Tent City 3’s stay on campus from mid-December 2020 to March 2021.
